Invading Siamese forces attempt to exploit the political chaos in Vietnam, but are ambushed and annihilated at the Mekong River by the Tay Son in the Battle of Rạch Gầm-Xoài Mút. (20. January 1785)

The University of Georgia is founded, the first public university in the United States. (27. January 1785)

Kamehameha I, the king of Hawaiʻ i, defeats Kalanikupule and establishes the Kingdom of Hawaiʻ i. (1. May 1785)

Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier, co-pilot of the first-ever manned flight (1783), and his companion, Pierre Romain, become the first-ever casualties of an air crash when their hot air balloon explodes during their attempt to cross the English Channel. (15. June 1785)

The dollar is unanimously chosen as the monetary unit for the United States. (6. July 1785)

The Treaty of Hopewell is signed. (28. November 1785)
