A Venezuelan Super-Constellation crashes in the Atlantic Ocean off Asbury Park, New Jersey, killing 74 people. (20. June 1956)

A TWA Super Constellation and a United Airlines DC-7 collide above the Grand Canyon in Arizona and crash, killing all 128 on board both planes. It is the worst-ever aviation disaster at that point in time. (30. June 1956)

Colo, the first gorilla to be bred in captivity, is born at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in Ohio. (22. December 1956)

Start of Gal Oya riots, the first reported ethnic riots that target minority Sri Lankan Tamils in the Eastern Province. The total number of deaths is reportedly 150. (11. June 1956)

The Supreme Court of the United States declares Alabama laws requiring segregated buses illegal, thus ending the Montgomery Bus Boycott. (13. November 1956)

The Federal-Aid Highway Act of 1956 is signed, officially creating the United States Interstate Highway System. (29. June 1956)

The Soviet Union and Japan sign a Joint Declaration, officially ending the state of war between the two countries that had existed since August 1945. (19. October 1956)

Morocco, Sudan and Tunisia join the United Nations. (12. November 1956)

The first commercial nuclear power station is officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in Sellafield,in Cumbria, England. (17. October 1956)

The Springhill mining disaster in Springhill, Nova Scotia kills 39 miners; 88 are rescued. (1. November 1956)
