The 1982 Chicago Tylenol murders begin when the first of seven individuals dies in metropolitan Chicago. (29. September 1982)

In the Soviet Union, Yuri Andropov becomes the general secretary of the Soviet Communist Party's Central Committee, succeeding Leonid I. Brezhnev. (12. November 1982)

Duk Koo Kim dies from injuries sustained during a 14-round match against Ray Mancini in Las Vegas, prompting reforms in the sport of boxing. (17. November 1982)

President-elect of Lebanon, Bachir Gemayel, is assassinated. (14. September 1982)

Bachir Gemayel is elected Lebanese President amidst the raging civil war. (23. August 1982)

Helmut Kohl replaces Helmut Schmidt as Chancellor of Germany through a Constructive Vote of No Confidence. (1. October 1982)

"The Jakarta Incident": British Airways Flight 9 flies into a cloud of volcanic ash thrown up by the eruption of Mount Galunggung, resulting in the failure of all four engines. (24. June 1982)

Cats opens on Broadway and runs for nearly 18 years before closing on September 10, 2000. (8. October 1982)

Turkish military diplomat Colonel Atilla Altıkat is shot and killed in Ottawa, Canada's capital city. Justice Commandos Against Armenian Genocide claim responsibility, saying they are avenging the massacre of 1.5 million Armenians in the 1915 Armenian Genocide. (27. August 1982)

Lech Wałęsa, the leader of Poland's outlawed Solidarity movement, is released after eleven months of internment near the Soviet border. (14. November 1982)

The Argentine base (Corbeta Uruguay) on Southern Thule surrenders to Royal Marine commandos in the final action of the Falklands War. (20. June 1982)

Falklands War: Argentine forces in the capital Stanley conditionally surrender to British forces. (14. June 1982)

Chicago Tylenol murders: Johnson & Johnson initiates a nationwide product recall in the United States for all products in its Tylenol brand after several bottles in Chicago are found to have been laced with cyanide, resulting in seven deaths. (5. October 1982)

Cyanide-laced Tylenol kills six people in the Chicago area. Seven are killed in all. (30. September 1982)
