Iyasu is proclaimed deposed as ruler of Ethiopia in a palace coup in favor of his aunt Zauditu. (27. September 1916)

Emma Goldman is arrested for lecturing on birth control. (11. February 1916)

World War I: Battle of Verdun – On the Western Front, the French Army successfully holds off the German Army and drives it back to its starting position. (19. December 1916)

The Everett Massacre takes place in Everett, Washington as political differences lead to a shoot-out between the Industrial Workers of the World organizers and local police. (5. November 1916)

World War I: Battle of Jutland – The British Grand Fleet under the command of John Jellicoe, 1st Earl Jellicoe and David Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty engage the Imperial German Navy under the command of Reinhard Scheer and Franz von Hipper in the largest naval battle of the war, which proves indecisive. (31. May 1916)
