The first commercial nuclear power station is officially opened by Queen Elizabeth II in Sellafield,in Cumbria, England. (17. October 1956)

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus closes its very last "Big Tent" show in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, due to changing economics all subsequent circus shows will be held in arenas. (16. July 1956)

The Soviet Union and Japan sign a Joint Declaration, officially ending the state of war between the two countries that had existed since August 1945. (19. October 1956)

As the World Turns and The Edge of Night premiere on CBS-TV. The two soaps become the first daytime dramas to debut in the 30-minute format. (2. April 1956)

Elvis Presley introduces his new single, "Hound Dog", on The Milton Berle Show, scandalizing the audience with his suggestive hip movements. (5. June 1956)

Formation of the East German Nationale Volksarmee (1. March 1956)

The IBM 305 RAMAC is introduced, the first commercial computer to use disk storage. (13. September 1956)

Actress Grace Kelly marries Prince Rainier of Monaco. (19. April 1956)

New York Yankees's Don Larsen pitched the only perfect game in a World Series; one of only 21 perfect games in MLB history. (8. October 1956)

Soviet forces suppress mass demonstrations in the Georgian SSR, reacting to Nikita Khrushchev's de-Stalinization policy. (9. March 1956)

The polio vaccine developed by Jonas Salk is made available to the public. (1. May 1956)

A TWA Super Constellation and a United Airlines DC-7 collide above the Grand Canyon in Arizona and crash, killing all 128 on board both planes. It is the worst-ever aviation disaster at that point in time. (30. June 1956)

The Indian states Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Mysore state are formally created under the States Reorganisation Act. (1. November 1956)

Suez Crisis: The United Kingdom and France begin bombing Egypt to force the reopening of the Suez Canal. (31. October 1956)

SS Ideal X, the world's first successful container ship, leaves Port Newark, New Jersey for Houston, Texas. (26. April 1956)

TAT-1, the first submarine transatlantic telephone cable system, is inaugurated. (25. September 1956)

The Tangier Protocol is signed: The international city Tangier is reintegrated into Morocco. (29. October 1956)
