US President Lyndon B. Johnson signs the Voting Rights Act of 1965 into law. (6. August 1965)

Vietnam War: Just miles from Da Nang, United States Marines repel an intense attack by wave after wave of Viet Cong forces, killing 56 guerrillas. (30. October 1965)

Indo-Pakistani War: The Indian Army captures the town of Burki, just southeast of Lahore. (11. September 1965)

The Canadian Space Agency launches the satellite Alouette 2. (29. November 1965)

The SS Yarmouth Castle burns and sinks 60 miles off Nassau with the loss of 90 lives. (13. November 1965)

Cuba and the United States formally agree to begin an airlift for Cubans who want to go to the United States. By 1971, 250,000 Cubans had made use of this program. (6. November 1965)

The Murder (Abolition of Death Penalty) Act 1965 is given Royal Assent, formally abolishing the death penalty in the United Kingdom. (8. November 1965)

A Charlie Brown Christmas, first in a series of Peanuts television specials, debuts on CBS. (9. December 1965)

War of 1965: India retaliates following Pakistan's Operation Grand Slam which resulted in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 that ends in a stalemate and follows the signing of the Tashkent Declaration. (6. September 1965)

Vietnam War: The Battle of Ia Drang begins – the first major engagement between regular American and North Vietnamese forces. (14. November 1965)

Nostra Aetate, the "Declaration on the Relation of the Church with Non-Christian Religions" of the Second Vatican Council, is promulgated by Pope Paul VI; it absolves the Jews of responsibility for the death of Jesus, reversing Innocent III's 760 year-old declaration. (28. October 1965)

In the Hammaguir launch facility in the Sahara Desert, France launches a Diamant-A rocket with its first satellite, Asterix-1, on board. (26. November 1965)

The Aero Spacelines Super Guppy aircraft makes its first flight. (31. August 1965)

The Catholic Worker Movement member Roger Allen LaPorte, protesting against the Vietnam War, sets himself on fire in front of the United Nations building. (9. November 1965)

Singapore is expelled from Malaysia and becomes the only country to date to gain independence unwillingly. (9. August 1965)

China announces that it will reinforce its troops on the Indian border. (7. September 1965)

The British Indian Ocean Territory is created, consisting of Chagos Archipelago, Aldabra, Farquhar and Des Roches islands. (8. November 1965)
