John Birges plants a bomb at Harvey's Resort Hotel in Stateline, Nevada, US. (26. August 1980)

A bomb explodes at the railway station in Bologna, Italy, killing 85 people and wounding more than 200. (2. August 1980)

Zimbabwe joins the United Nations. (25. August 1980)

The Montevideo Treaty, establishing the Latin American Integration Association, is signed. (12. August 1980)

Italian Aerolinee Itavia Flight 870 mysteriously explodes in mid air while in route from Bologna to Palermo, killing all 81 on board. Also known in Italy as the Ustica disaster (27. June 1980)

At the Oktoberfest terror attack in Munich 13 people died and 211 were injured. (26. September 1980)

The 1980 Grand Island tornado outbreak. Seven tornadoes hit Grand Island, Nebraska, which take five lives, 357 single-family homes, 33 mobile homes, 85 apartments, 49 businesses and cause $300 million in damages all told, according to statistics compiled on the deadly storm by the National Weather Service and the American Red Cross. (3. June 1980)

The United Nations Security Council votes 14-0 that member states should not recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. (20. July 1980)

A train crash kills 18 people in County Cork, Ireland. (1. August 1980)

Cable News Network (CNN) begins broadcasting. (1. June 1980)

"O Canada" officially becomes the national anthem of Canada. (1. July 1980)

Vanuatu gains independence. (30. July 1980)

Saudia Flight 163, a Lockheed L-1011 TriStar burns after making an emergency landing at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, killing 301 people. (19. August 1980)

Ethernet specifications are published by Xerox working with Intel and Digital Equipment Corporation. (30. September 1980)

Vigdís Finnbogadóttir is elected President of Iceland and becomes the world's first democratically elected female head of state. (1. August 1980)

Terry Fox's Marathon of Hope ends near Thunder Bay, Ontario. (1. September 1980)
