The Aero Spacelines Super Guppy aircraft makes its first flight. (31. August 1965)

The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development is established. (9. September 1965)

Nguyen Cao Ky becomes Prime Minister of South Vietnam at the head of a military junta; General Nguyen Van Thieu becomes the figurehead chief of state. (14. June 1965)

The infamous first Reyes party between Ken Kesey's Merry Pranksters and motorcycle gang the Hells Angels takes place at Kesey's estate in La Honda, California introducing psychedelics to the gang world and forever linking the hippie movement to the Hell's Angels. (7. August 1965)

War of 1965: India retaliates following Pakistan's Operation Grand Slam which resulted in the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 that ends in a stalemate and follows the signing of the Tashkent Declaration. (6. September 1965)

Hurricane Betsy makes its second landfall near New Orleans, Louisiana, leaving 76 dead and $1.42 billion ($10–12 billion in 2005 dollars) in damages, becoming the first hurricane to top $1 billion in unadjusted damages. (9. September 1965)

Singapore is expelled from Malaysia and becomes the only country to date to gain independence unwillingly. (9. August 1965)

The Beatles play to nearly 60,000 fans at Shea Stadium in New York, New York, an event later regarded as the birth of stadium rock. (15. August 1965)

Vietnam War: In a follow-up to August's Operation Starlight, United States Marines and South Vietnamese forces initiate Operation Piranha on the Batangan Peninsula. (7. September 1965)

The Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 (also known as the Second Kashmir War) between India and Pakistan over Kashmir, ends after the UN calls for a cease-fire. (22. September 1965)

The Lockheed L-100, the civilian version of the C-130 Hercules, is introduced. (30. September 1965)

Duane Earl Pope robs the Farmers' State Bank of Big Springs, Nebraska, killing three people execution-style and severely wounding a fourth. The crime later puts Pope on the FBI Ten Most Wanted list. (4. June 1965)

The Mariner 4 flyby of Mars takes the first close-up photos of another planet. (14. July 1965)

Gambia, Maldives and Singapore are admitted as members of the United Nations. (21. September 1965)

The Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 begins as Pakistani soldiers cross the Line of Control dressed as locals. (5. August 1965)

The Gemini V spacecraft returns to Earth, landing in the Atlantic ocean. (29. August 1965)

A fire at a Titan missile base near Searcy, Arkansas kills 53 construction workers. (9. August 1965)
