Emily Davison, a suffragette, runs out in front of King George V's horse, Anmer, at the Epsom Derby. She is trampled, never regains consciousness and dies a few days later. (4. June 1913)

Tōhoku Imperial University of Japan (modern day Tohoku University) becomes the first university in Japan to admit female students. (16. August 1913)

The Great Lakes Storm of 1913, the most destructive natural disaster ever to hit the lakes, destroys 19 ships and kills more than 250 people. (9. November 1913)

The Federal Reserve Act is signed into law by President Woodrow Wilson, creating the Federal Reserve System. (23. December 1913)

Second Balkan War: Serbian forces begin their siege of the Bulgarian city of Vidin; the siege is later called off when the war ends. (12. July 1913)

The first day of the Great Lakes Storm of 1913, a massive blizzard that ultimately killed 250 and caused over $5 million (about $118,098,000 in 2013 dollars) damage. Winds reach hurricane force on this date. (7. November 1913)

Nicaragua becomes a signatory to the Buenos Aires Convention. (15. December 1913)
