Citing government misconduct, Daniel Ellsberg has charges for his involvement in releasing the Pentagon Papers to The New York Times dismissed. (11. May 1973)

Ezeiza massacre in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Snipers fire upon left-wing Peronists. At least 13 are killed and more than 300 are injured. (20. June 1973)

In the Lillehammer affair in Norway, Israeli Mossad agents kill a waiter whom they mistakenly thought was involved in the 1972 Munich Olympics Massacre. (21. July 1973)

The Sydney Opera House opens. (20. October 1973)

The Pakistani Constitution of 1973 comes into effect. (14. August 1973)

Juan Perón returns to power in Argentina. (23. September 1973)

Vietnam War: The United States bombing of Cambodia ends. (15. August 1973)

Varig Flight 820 crashes near Paris, France on approach to Orly Airport, killing 123 of the 134 on board. (11. July 1973)

Elections are held for the Northern Ireland Assembly, which will lead to power-sharing between unionists and nationalists in Northern Ireland for the first time. (28. June 1973)

A BLEVE (Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapor Explosion) in Kingman, Arizona, following a fire that broke out as propane was being transferred from a railroad car to a storage tank, kills eleven firefighters. (5. July 1973)

Mountjoy Prison helicopter escape. Three Provisional Irish Republican Army members escape from Mountjoy Prison, Dublin, Republic of Ireland aboard a hijacked helicopter that lands in the exercise yard. (31. October 1973)

Greek military junta of 1967–1974: Junta strongman George Papadopoulos appoints Spyros Markezinis as Prime Minister of Greece with the task to lead Greece to parliamentary rule. (8. October 1973)

The Congress of Chile votes in favour of a resolution condemning President Salvador Allende's government and demands him to resign or else be unseated through force and new elections be called. The first demand is executed eighteen days later in a bloody coup d'etat, commencing 17 years of military rule. (22. August 1973)

President Richard Nixon rejects an Appeals Court decision that he turn over the Watergate tapes. (19. October 1973)

Henry Kissinger and Le Duc Tho are awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. (16. October 1973)

A coup in Chile headed by General Augusto Pinochet topples the democratically elected president Salvador Allende. Pinochet exercises dictatorial power until ousted in a referendum in 1988, staying in power until 1990. (11. September 1973)

In the Thammasat student uprising over 100,000 people protest in Thailand against the Thanom military government; 77 are killed and 857 are injured by soldiers. (14. October 1973)

The Bahamas gain full independence within the Commonwealth of Nations. (10. July 1973)
