The entire Torino football team (except for two players who did not take the trip: Sauro Tomà, due to an injury and Renato Gandolfi, because of coach request) is killed in a plane crash at the Superga hill at the edge of Turin, Italy. (4. May 1949)

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East is established to provide aid to Palestinian refugees who left their homes during the 1948 Palestinian exodus. (8. December 1949)

Ezra Pound is awarded the first Bollingen Prize in poetry by the Bollingen Foundation and Yale University. (19. February 1949)

The first Plenary Session of the National People's Congress approves the design of the Flag of the People's Republic of China. (27. September 1949)

U.S. President Harry S. Truman signs the National Security Act Amendment, streamlining the defense agencies of the United States government, and replacing the Department of War with the United States Department of Defense. (10. August 1949)

The Government of Canada repeals Japanese Canadian internment after seven years. (1. April 1949)

KC2XAK of Bridgeport, Connecticut becomes the first Ultra high frequency (UHF) television station to operate a daily schedule. (29. December 1949)

Albert II, a rhesus monkey, rides a V2 rocket to an altitude of 134 km (83 mi), thereby becoming the first monkey in space. (14. June 1949)

The first oil was taken in Oil Rocks (Neft Daşları), oldest offshore oil platform. (7. November 1949)

The Soviet Union lifts its blockade of Berlin. (12. May 1949)

WERD, the 1st black-owned radio station in the United States, opens in Atlanta, Georgia. (3. October 1949)

Nikolaos Zachariadis, leader of the Communist Party of Greece, announces a "temporary cease-fire", effectively ending the Greek Civil War. (16. October 1949)

The Dutch–Indonesian Round Table Conference ends with the Netherlands agreeing to transfer sovereignty of the Dutch East Indies to the United States of Indonesia. (2. November 1949)

The extensive deportation campaign known as March deportation is conducted in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania to force collectivisation by way of terror. The Soviet authorities deport more than 92,000 people from the Baltics to remote areas of the Soviet Union. (25. March 1949)

The Mann Gulch fire kills 13 firefighters in Montana. (5. August 1949)
