World War I: A British force unsuccessfully attempts to relieve the siege of Kut (present-day Iraq) in the Battle of Dujaila. (8. March 1916)

World War I: Battle of Jutland – The British Grand Fleet under the command of John Jellicoe, 1st Earl Jellicoe and David Beatty, 1st Earl Beatty engage the Imperial German Navy under the command of Reinhard Scheer and Franz von Hipper in the largest naval battle of the war, which proves indecisive. (31. May 1916)

Easter Rising: Martial law in Ireland is lifted and the rebellion is officially over with the surrender of Irish nationalists to British authorities in Dublin. (29. April 1916)

Governor-General of Korea established clinic called Jahyewon in Sorokdo to segregate Hansen's disease patients. (24. February 1916)

An Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire led by Lawrence of Arabia breaks out. (10. June 1916)

Easter Rebellion: The United Kingdom declares martial law in Ireland. (25. April 1916)

World War I: First day on the Somme – On the first day of the Battle of the Somme 19,000 soldiers of the British Army are killed and 40,000 wounded. (1. July 1916)

Anzac Day is commemorated for the first time on the first anniversary of the landing at Anzac Cove. (25. April 1916)

Louis Brandeis is sworn in as a Justice of the United States Supreme Court; he is the first American Jew to hold such a position. (5. June 1916)

The Quebec Bridge's central span collapses, killing 11 men. The bridge initially collapsed in toto on August 29, 1907. (11. September 1916)

A 611 gram chondrite type meteorite strikes a house near the village of Baxter in Stone County, Missouri. (18. January 1916)
