Soviet and Chinese forces clash at a border outpost on the Ussuri River. (2. March 1969)

The 385 metres (1,263 ft) tall TV-mast at Emley Moor, United Kingdom, collapses due to ice build-up. (19. March 1969)

In Toulouse, France, the first test flight of the Anglo-French Concorde is conducted. (2. March 1969)

Hawthorne Nevada Airlines Flight 708 crashes into Mount Whitney killing all on board. (18. February 1969)

East Pakistani police kill student activist Amanullah Asaduzzaman. The resulting outrage is in part responsible for the Bangladesh Liberation War. (20. January 1969)

British yachtsman Sir Robin Knox-Johnston wins the Sunday Times Golden Globe Race and completes the first solo non-stop circumnavigation of the world. (22. April 1969)

Black Panther Party members Bunchy Carter and John Huggins are killed during a meeting in Campbell Hall on the campus of UCLA. (17. January 1969)

Vietnam War: US President Richard Nixon makes an unscheduled visit to South Vietnam and meets with President Nguyen Van Thieu and U.S. military commanders. (30. July 1969)

Apollo program: NASA launches Apollo 9 to test the lunar module. (3. March 1969)

Apollo program: Apollo 11 successfully makes the first manned landing on the Moon in the Sea of Tranquility. Americans Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin become the first humans to walk on the Moon almost 7 hours later. (US Time) (20. July 1969)

Charles de Gaulle resigns as President of France. (28. April 1969)

Software Industry IBM announced that effective January 1970 it would price its software and services separately from hardware thus creating the modern software industry. (23. June 1969)

Space Race: Neil Armstrong and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin become the first humans to walk on the Moon, during the Apollo 11 mission (July 20 in North America). (21. July 1969)

Vietnam War: U.S. President Richard Nixon declares the Nixon Doctrine, stating that the United States now expects its Asian allies to take care of their own military defense. This is the start of the "Vietnamization" of the war. (25. July 1969)

The Cuyahoga River catches fire, triggering a crack-down on pollution in the river. (22. June 1969)

Venera program: Soviet Venera 6 begins its descent into the atmosphere of Venus, sending back atmospheric data before being crushed by pressure. (17. May 1969)
