Vietnam War: United States Secretary of Defense Melvin Laird announces that the United States will start to "Vietnamize" the war effort. (3. April 1969)

In Toulouse, France, the first test flight of the Anglo-French Concorde is conducted. (2. March 1969)

Yasser Arafat takes over as chairman of the Palestine Liberation Organization. (4. February 1969)

Soviet spacecraft Soyuz 4 and Soyuz 5 perform the first-ever docking of manned spacecraft in orbit, the first-ever transfer of crew from one space vehicle to another, and the only time such a transfer was accomplished with a space walk. (16. January 1969)
