Pan American Airlines becomes the first commercial airline to schedule a flight around the world. (6. January 1947)

The Journey of Reconciliation, the first interracial Freedom Ride begins through the upper South in violation of Jim Crow laws. The riders wanted enforcement of the United States Supreme Court's 1946 Irene Morgan decision that banned racial segregation in interstate travel. (9. April 1947)

The Supreme Court of Japan is established. (4. August 1947)

Thor Heyerdahl and five crew mates set out from Peru on the Kon-Tiki to prove that Peruvian natives could have settled Polynesia. (28. April 1947)

Cold War: in an effort to fight the spread of Communism, the U.S. President Harry S. Truman signs an act into law that will later be called the Truman Doctrine. The act grants $400 million in military and economic aid to Turkey and Greece, each battling an internal Communist movement. (22. May 1947)

Paul becomes king of Greece, on the death of his childless elder brother, George II. (1. April 1947)

The American and British occupation zones in Germany, after World War II, merge to form the Bizone, that later became West Germany. (1. January 1947)

Partition Plan: The United Nations General Assembly approves a plan for the partition of Palestine. (29. November 1947)

First case of a computer bug being found: a moth lodges in a relay of a Harvard Mark II computer at Harvard University. (9. September 1947)

The Prime Minister of the shadow Burmese government, Bogyoke Aung San and 6 of his cabinet and 2 non-cabinet members are assassinated by Galon U Saw. (19. July 1947)

India gains Independence from the British Indian Empire after near 90 years of Crown rule and joins the Commonwealth of Nations. (15. August 1947)

The "Indian Independence Bill" is presented before the British House of Commons, proposing the independence of the Provinces of British India into two sovereign countries: India and Pakistan. (4. July 1947)

Marshall Plan: In a speech at Harvard University, the United States Secretary of State George Marshall calls for economic aid to war-torn Europe. (5. June 1947)

In Nevada, the Boulder Dam is renamed the Hoover Dam a second time. (30. April 1947)

Typhoon Kathleen hit the Kanto Region in Japan killing 1,077. (15. September 1947)

The Screen Actors Guild implements an anti-Communist loyalty oath. (17. November 1947)
