An assassination attempt is made on Bob Marley. He is shot twice, but will play a concert only two days later. (3. December 1976)

The United Nations General Assembly adopts the Convention on the Prohibition of Military or Any Other Hostile Use of Environmental Modification Techniques. (10. December 1976)

Fidel Castro becomes President of Cuba, replacing Osvaldo Dorticós Torrado. (2. December 1976)

Massacre of students gathering at Thammasat University in Bangkok, Thailand, to protest the return of ex-dictator Thanom, by a coalition of right-wing paramilitary and government forces, triggering the return of the military to government. (6. October 1976)

Red Dye No. 4 is banned by the US Food and Drug Administration after it is discovered that it causes tumors in the bladders of dogs. The dye is still used in Canada. (22. October 1976)

Angola joins the United Nations. (1. December 1976)

Western Samoa becomes a member of the United Nations. (15. December 1976)

Apneist Jacques Mayol is the first man to reach a depth of 100 m undersea without breathing equipment. (23. November 1976)

Battle of Aishiya in Lebanon. (19. October 1976)

A Bolivian Boeing 707 cargo jet crashes in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, killing 100 (97, mostly children, killed on the ground). (13. October 1976)

Cubana Flight 455 crashes into the Atlantic Ocean shortly after taking off from Bridgetown, Barbados, after two bombs, placed on board by terrorists with connections to the CIA, exploded. All 73 people on board are killed. (6. October 1976)

George Washington's appointment, posthumously, to the grade of General of the Armies of the United States by congressional joint resolution Public Law 94-479 is approved by President Gerald R. Ford. (11. October 1976)

The first electron micrograph of an Ebola viral particle is obtained by Dr. F.A. Murphy, now at U.C. Davis, who was then working at the C.D.C. (13. October 1976)

René Lévesque and the Parti Québécois take power to become the first Quebec government of the 20th century clearly in favor of independence. (15. November 1976)

The Communist Party of Nepal (Marxist–Leninist) is founded. (26. December 1976)

Hua Guofeng becomes Mao Zedong's successor as chairman of Communist Party of China, following the latter's death barely a month earlier. (7. October 1976)

The 1976 Çaldıran-Muradiye earthquake in eastern Turkey kills between 4,000 and 5,000 people. (24. November 1976)

The oil tanker MV Argo Merchant runs aground near Nantucket, Massachusetts, causing one of the worst marine oil spills in history. (15. December 1976)

A series of earthquakes spreads panic in the city of Thessaloniki, which is evacuated. (8. November 1976)
