Vietnam War: As part of Vietnamization, US President Richard M. Nixon sets February 1, 1972 as the deadline for the removal of another 45,000 American troops from Vietnam. (12. November 1971)

Mariner 9 enters orbit around Mars. (14. November 1971)

Britain launches the satellite Prospero into low Earth orbit atop a Black Arrow carrier rocket, the only British satellite to date launched by a British rocket. (28. October 1971)

The Soviet space program's Mars 2 orbiter releases a descent module. It malfunctions and crashes, but it is the first man-made object to reach the surface of Mars. (27. November 1971)

Representatives of the People's Republic of China attend the United Nations, including the United Nations Security Council, for the first time. (23. November 1971)
