Eleven mountaineers from international expeditions died on K2, the second-highest mountain on Earth in the worst single accident in the history of K2 mountaineering. (1. August 2008)

Sixteen infants in Gansu Province, China, who had been fed on tainted milk powder, are diagnosed with kidney stones; in total an estimated 300,000 infants are affected. (16. July 2008)

The historic Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare burns down for the second time in 80 years. (28. July 2008)

South Ossetian War: Russian units occupy the Georgian city of Gori. (13. August 2008)

Former Macedonian Interior Minister Ljube Boškoski is acquitted of all charges by a United Nations Tribunal accusing him of war crimes. (10. July 2008)

Georgia launches a large-scale military offensive against South Ossetia, in an attempt to reclaim the territory from Russia, starting the 2008 South Ossetia war. (7. August 2008)

American swimmer Michael Phelps becomes the first person to win eight gold medals in one Olympic Games. (17. August 2008)

56 people are killed and over 200 people are injured in 21 bomb blasts in Ahmedabad bombing in India. (26. July 2008)

A EuroCity express train en route from Kraków, Poland to Prague, Czech Republic strikes a part of a motorway bridge that had fallen onto the railroad track near Studénka railway station in the Czech Republic and derails, killing 8 people and injuring 64 others. (8. August 2008)

Rioting erupted in Mongolia in response to allegations of fraud surrounding the 2008 legislative elections. (1. July 2008)

A military junta led by Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz stages a coup d'état in Mauritania, overthrowing president Sidi Ould Cheikh Abdallahi. (6. August 2008)

President of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf resigns due to the threat of impeachment. (18. August 2008)

Spanair Flight 5022, from Madrid, Spain to Gran Canaria, skids off the runway and crashes at Barajas Airport. 146 people are killed in the crash, and 8 more die later. Only 18 people survive. (20. August 2008)
