The Communist Party of China writes the Common Programme for the future People's Republic of China. (29. September 1949)

Nikolaos Zachariadis, leader of the Communist Party of Greece, announces a "temporary cease-fire", effectively ending the Greek Civil War. (16. October 1949)

Long-Haired Hare, starring Bugs Bunny, is released in theaters. (25. June 1949)

The diplomatic relations between the Soviet Union and the German Democratic Republic are established. (16. October 1949)

The Berlin Airlift ends. (30. September 1949)

Allied military authorities relinquish control of former Nazi Germany assets back to German control. (6. September 1949)

The communist German Democratic Republic (East Germany) is formed. (7. October 1949)

The keel for the aircraft carrier USS United States is laid down at Newport News Drydock and Shipbuilding. However, construction is canceled five days later, resulting in the Revolt of the Admirals. (18. April 1949)
