An order-in-council passed under the Defence of Canada Regulations of the War Measures Act gives the Canadian federal government the power to intern all "persons of Japanese racial origin". (24. February 1942)

World War II: Ten Japanese warplanes raid the town of Broome, Western Australia, killing more than 100 people. (3. March 1942)

Benxihu Colliery accident in Manchukuo leaves 1549 Chinese miners dead. (26. April 1942)

World War II: In the Indian Ocean, Japanese forces capture the Andaman Islands. (23. March 1942)

World War II: Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox enlists in the United States Marine Corps as a flight instructor. (22. May 1942)

World War II: Second Battle of Kharkov: in eastern Ukraine, Red Army forces under Marshal Semyon Timoshenko launch a major offensive from the Izium bridgehead, only to be encircled and destroyed by the troops of Army Group South two weeks later. (12. May 1942)

World War II: Top United States military leaders hold their first formal meeting to discuss American military strategy in the war. (9. February 1942)

World War II: 1000 British bombers launch a 90-minute attack on Cologne, Germany. (30. May 1942)

The first V-2 rocket test launch. It exploded at lift-off. (16. March 1942)

World War II: The Battle of the Coral Sea comes to an end with Japanese Imperial Navy aircraft carrier aircraft attacking and sinking the United States Navy aircraft carrier USS Lexington. The battle marks the first time in the naval history that two enemy fleets fight without visual contact between warring ships. (8. May 1942)

Battle of Pasir Panjang contributes to the fall of Singapore. (14. February 1942)

World War II: In occupied France, British naval forces successfully raid the German-occupied port of St. Nazaire. (28. March 1942)

World War II: The Battle of Bataan/Bataan Death March – United States forces surrender on the Bataan Peninsula. The Japanese Navy launches an air raid on Trincomalee in Ceylon (Sri Lanka); Royal Navy aircraft carrier HMS Hermes and Royal Australian Navy Destroyer HMAS Vampire are sunk off the island's east coast. (9. April 1942)

World War II: The most famous (and first international) Aggie Muster is held on the Philippine island of Corregidor, by Brigadier General George F. Moore (with 25 fellow Texas A&M graduates who are under his command), while 1.8 million pounds of shells pounded the island over a 5-hour attack. (21. April 1942)

World War II: President Franklin D. Roosevelt orders General Douglas MacArthur out of the Philippines as the Japanese victory becomes inevitable. (22. February 1942)

World War II: President Franklin D. Roosevelt creates the National War Labor Board. (12. January 1942)

The Bombing of Lübeck in World War II is the first major success for the RAF Bomber Command against Germany and a German city. (29. March 1942)
