On his third voyage to the Western Hemisphere, Christopher Columbus becomes the first European to discover the island of Trinidad. (31. July 1498)

Cesare Borgia, son of Pope Alexander VI, becomes the first person in history to resign the cardinalate. On the same day, the French King Louis XII names him Duke of Valentinois. (17. August 1498)

The 1498 Meiō Nankaidō earthquake generates a tsunami that washes away the building housing the statue of the Great Buddha at Kōtoku-in in Kamakura, Kanagawa, Japan; since then the Buddha has sat in the open air. (20. September 1498)
